As part of a newly approved initiative to promote palm oil-related research in North America, the American Palm Oil Council (based in Washington DC) is soliciting nominations for its inaugural Junior Scientists Program. The aim of this program is to increase awareness amongst junior scientists of the diverse research projects being undertaken world-wide on palm oil. It is also an opportunity to introduce them to senior scientists and leading members of the oils and fats industry working in the area and provide avenues for collaborative research both in academia and industry.
To be eligible, the Junior Scientist must
a) be in an independent research position in academia or industry within the United States or Canada. (In the case of academia, only non-tenured candidates will be considered)
b) must currently be engaged in research related to nutrition and chronic diseases (e.g. cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, neurodegeneration)
c) publication(s) in peer-reviewed journals since 2008 related to some aspect of palm oil-related research would be an advantage
Finalists will be selected by a panel of senior scientists and will be invited to attend the 7th Global Oils and Fats Forum hosted by the American Palm Oil Council, Sep 29 and 30, 2011 at the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The conference will cover various aspects of oils and fats – research, marketing, economics. This will serve as an excellent networking opportunity for the Junior Scientists. The selected finalists will have their registration waived and be provided with complimentary hotel stay (3 nights) and round-trip economy airfare. Winners will be notified by September 14, 2011.
To apply, please submit a 4 page electronic copy of your CV which must include a brief description of your current research. Additionally, please provide no more than a one page synopsis of how your current research has relevance for the palm oil industry, specifically, and the oils/fats industry in general.
